SPOT is a device that utilizes GPS satellites to provide signals and has an onboard GPS chip that determines your GPS location.  It sends your location or your equipment's location and a preselected message to communication satellites.  These communication satellites relay your message to specific satellite antennas around the world.  From here, a global network routes your location and message to the appropriate network determined by you.  Your location and messages are delivered according to your instructions via email, text message, or emergency notification to the GEOS Rescue Coordination Center.  Essentially - a SPOT will let your contact know where you are or where a piece of equipment is at that instant.

 

The SPOT is a great tool to add to a company's safety program or even a personal household.  When working alone or enjoying a pastime that commands solitude, the SPOT would be a priceless device to your kit.
